What it's like

A downland par 71 course founded in 1896 in the South Downs National Park, on Chapel Hill above Lewes. The club says its fairways, tees and main greens stay firm almost 365 days a year, and calls it a Top 100 Fine Running course in England. It also has a driving range and a short-game area. Access is a narrow, steep lane with a 7ft width limit and a 7.5 ton weight limit, signed from the Tesco roundabout.

Best for

  • Winter downland golf on chalk
  • Views over the Downs

Skip if

  • You don't want hills and wind
  • You're towing or driving something wide (the access lane has a 7ft width limit)
