What it's like

This is a 9-hole course with 18 tees, so a full round is the nine played twice from different tees. It was founded in 1887, designed by James Braid, and the club's own claim is that it is the oldest golf club in Sussex. The course is par 69 from the white and black tees at 5905 yards, on Devil's Dyke Road with views over the Downs, the sea and the city.

It is a different club from Dyke, a short drive along the same road. Directions: just off the A2038, half a mile on from the A23/A27 junction, on the left after Golf Farm.

Best for

  • An afternoon round or a quick 9 holes
  • Visitors with no handicap certificate
  • Golfers who like a friendly club rather than a posh one

Skip if

  • You want a morning tee time (visitors from 12pm only)
  • You can't face hills, which reviewers flag
