What it's like

Dyke is an 18-hole, par 72 downland course founded in 1906 and designed by James Braid. It sits 650 feet above sea level above Brighton, with views out to sea and across the South Downs. The club says natural drainage keeps it playable all year.

Don't confuse it with Brighton & Hove Golf Club, which is also on Devil's Dyke Road. The postcode BN1 8YJ won't take your sat nav to the clubhouse. Carry on half a mile past the A23/A27 junction and take the sharp right-hand bend; the clubhouse is on the right.

Best for

The short version

Greens come up most. Six reviewers between 2024 and 2026 praise them, one in May 2025 finding them "a little slow but true". The views get a mention too: Dave C (Golfshake, September 2026) wrote "Amazing course with epic views , outstanding breakfast". In October 2025 Steve Stockham played in "biblical rain" and said the course "stood up very well". A 2017 Tripadvisor reviewer called the bar staff "frankly unpleasant"; nothing recent repeats it.

Who it's for

Golfers who don't mind paying the top Brighton price and booking ahead. It also has PGA coaching and an indoor studio (see the Indoor Performance Studio). It's a poor fit if you want to arrive unannounced: the club asks casual visitors to phone the Pro Shop on 01273 857260 first.

First time here

  1. Book online up to two weeks ahead. You pay in full at booking.
  2. Check in at the Pro Shop and arrive 30 minutes before your tee time.
  3. Wear a collared or golf-specific top and golf shoes. No jeans, cargo trousers or gym wear, and no phone calls on the course.
  4. Men play from the yellow tees, ladies from the red.

The record doesn't say whether visitors need a handicap certificate.

Good to know

  • From October or November to March only medical buggies run. Eight GPS buggies are for hire.
  • No driving range, just a practice ground with a chipping and putting green.
  • Kitchen open 7:30am to 3:30pm daily, and the bar and restaurant welcome non-members.
